Where is Devin

Thoughts from the Road

January 2010

  • A sweaty middle age woman peeks into the temple ahead of us. She pauses for a moment at the entrance, then abruptly turns and toddles back. She’s muttering in English, “Enough Buddhas already.”

  • Wat Watchers

A Wat is a sacred Buddhist area with monks quarters. They’re everywhere in Bangkok, almost as ubiquitous as the 7/11.

If Eric and I started a tour company in Bangkok, we would call it “Wat Watchers”. It would involve an intense regime of Wat visiting with as many puns on the word Wat as possible. It’s tiring because there’s so many in the city, but visiting them all would be a wat of fun.

  • My friend Eric sent me a text message the morning of our flight asking where I was.  I had just gotten out of bed and it made me laugh.  He had probably confused 12pm with 12am, thinking our flight left in the afternoon rather than the evening.

As the more experienced traveler of the two, I realized I would need to be teaching him a lot of these travel skills.  The more you travel, the more experienced you become.  He probably hadn’t even checked the ticket the night before.  To set him straight, I looked up the departure time of our reservation.

He was right. Our flight departed in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
